This is the story of a twelve-year-old boy named Miguel who lives in a small village in Mexico. His whole family is in the business of shoemaking, and one thing is strictly banned in his family, and that is music. The reason behind this prohibition on music is that Miguel’s great grandfather had left his wife and went out of the country to fulfil his dream of becoming a musician. His great grandmother banned music from her family so that no one can make the same mistake again. However, Miguel wants to be a musician, and in this journey, he enters the land of the dead and meets his ancestors.
